Elderberry Brides... the story so far
A short history of Elderberry Brides of Basingstoke
In the beginning
The idea of opening a bridal shop came about after Elderberry Brides' founder and current owner, Pam Armstrong, tried to find a bridal outfit for herself back in the mid-nineties.
It seemed there were few, if any, bridal shops in the UK at that time that catered for the larger size bride so, in July 2000, Elderberry Brides of Basingstoke came into being.
Pam began importing plus size bridal gowns from a leading supplier in the US. Once the stock list had reached approximately 30 dresses, Elderberry Brides started to to advertise and that's when things really began to take off.
Our first 'home'
By Christmas 2001, the business was growing rapidly so in March 2002, Elderberry Brides opened the doors to at Unit 34, Basepoint Enterprise Centre in the Daneshill area of Basingstoke. Brand new labels arrived in regular sizes from world-leading bridal designers to complement the plus size gowns. Additionally, top quality suppliers for bridal accessories were found to help complete the look for our brides.
Bridesmaids and flower girls dresses for the bride's wedding party followed very quickly after and at least one supplier of bridal wear for the bride's attendants remains with us to this day. Hire services also materialised at this time on items such hoops and with an increasing interest for prom gowns, Elderberry Brides also started to offer this type of special occasion wear for the school prom season.
Destination town centre
May 2004 saw Elderberry Brides move once more. This time to 8 New Street in Basingstoke town centre in Hampshire from where we currently welcome our customers.
Since that time, Elderberry Brides has continued to grow the breadth and depth of its products and services for brides of all sizes and budgets. We're a leading UK specialist in plus size wedding dresses for fuller figure brides both in the shop and on-line. Brides looking for the perfect bridesmaids dresses can also shop on-line at Elderberry Bridesmaids after the launch of our popular e-commerce website in 2008.
Yet another innovation from Elderberry Brides was the formation of A-Line Services, our professional, in-house, bridal wear alteration service. The purpose of A-Line Services was two-fold. Firstly, it took away a lot of the hassle experienced by our brides in finding someone to undertake their gown alterations, and secondly, it helped consolidate the 'one-stop' nature of the bridal shop.
Still growing, still fulfilling dreams
After a significant refurbishment of 8 New Street in 2011 including expanding into the whole of the first floor, Elderberry Brides is now able to offer an even better customer experience. For our brides, this means that there's now a dedicated bridal room, couture bridal room and a new area exclusively for bridesmaids, junior bridesmaids and flower girls.
And for the bride on a budget we also have a sale room where brides can discover fantastic, top quality bargain wedding dresses.
Elderberry Brides has said hello and goodbye (and hello again!) to many bridal styles over the years along with a number of wonderfully dedicated staff. But we never say goodbye to our brides... only a friendly wave and good luck wish for the future.
